My friend has been making me really jealous recently. She has just been buying herself the most fabulous holiday home in bocas del toro. She has been showing me pictures of it and then taking visits out there to measure up and organise decorators and she is getting curtains made and ordering furniture and things. It looks like such a lot of fun and it has been great helping her with it a bit. She has said that I will be able to stay there once she has finalised the sale and got it all in order. I am really looking forward to that as I cannot normally afford holidays but to be able to have free accommodation will really make a big difference and it will be great to stay with her and her family and they all get on so well with my family. Having children of the same age is great and our husbands get on well too so it should be a great fun time. I just hope the sale goes through as I think that I am beginning to get as excited about it as she is! They just have to work through the bocas del toro real estate system and they will have it all sorted out.

I sometimes wonder why people get so worried about their wedding. It is only one day and if the views are important to you, which of course they should be, then that promise you make should be more important than how you look, what the food is like, who is there etc. It makes me wonder, when people go on about choosing wedding dress designers, the best venue, a good florist etc. I do wonder whether they start to lose sight of what the day is actually about and how it should just be a vow between a couple that they will stay together for life. It seems like many people just see it as an opportunity to have a good party and see friends and relatives and almost forget what it is all about and why they are celebrating in the first place. I often think that the obsession with the bride dress, venue, guest list, events before and after and each small detail down to each wedding flower seems extremely obsessive. I do think that worrying about each thing will mean that it is easier to see the imperfections rather than just enjoy the day for the important occasion that it really is.

I will be going to a new year’s party soon and I am not looking forward to it. I am sure that the food and drinks will be great and that the hostess will be fantastic but I know that a relative is going who is always very boring and tends to make a beeline for me. He works in emi shielding and loves to talk about it. I am not sure that people who even work in this area, like to talk about it much, apart from him of course! I remember he talked to me last year for a whole hour about thin film deposition and it was so dull! I guess I must be the most polite person at the party as I just listened and did not make any excuse to go away. I do not like to do that and in a way I feel sorry for him because it is not his fault that he has nothing else to talk about as he has no wife or children and hardly any friends because work is so important to him.

I will just have to make sure that I am not talking to him just before midnight as I would not like to think of him giving me a kiss – which is what everyone traditionally does at the party. Perhaps I will have to rush off and get a drink and find my husband at that point!
